Sandia researcher stands next to molecular beam epitaxy system. Working through a cooperative research and development agreement (crada) with cielo communications inc. , sandia developed the gallium arsenide-based vertical cavity surface emitting laser (vcsel). It will be cheaper and easier to build than standard edge emitting lasers used in current high-speed fiber optics communications. The molecular beam epitaxy system seen in the image is used to grow the crystal structure of the vcsels.
